In Memoriam

CAROL LONG GAFFNEY

October 7, 1945—February 1, 2012

Member, St. Monica's Chapter, Church of the Epiphany, Richardson, TX

From the moment Carol received her cross at the Service of Admission, June 8, 2008, she began to live out the Motto of the Order of the Daughters of the King. Carol became part of the DOK Flower Ministry, taking altar flowers to those in the hospital, nursing homes or shut-in. She worked in the Church bookstore--smiling and chatting with all the shoppers. She coordinated meals for members of our Parish who needed food during times of crisis. Carol served as the Graphic Editor for the electronic church newsletter. When her health dictated that she serve from home, she was Editor of Constant Contact communication on all the Epiphany communications.

Carol loved being a Daughter of the King. When she did the study to prepare for admission to the Order she said she felt blessed with every lesson and blessed by the women who were part of the Study with her. Carol was never without her cross. She gave real meaning to the phrase in the Prayer of the Order “Grant that we, your Daughters, ever may discern your truth and bear your cross through the battles of our earthly life”. Carol will be missed by all who were blessed to know and to love her.

Dear Heavenly Father, Grant the light of your presence and the glory of the life beyond to be Carol’s great and everlasting reward. AMEN

From the remarks by Donna DeMoss at the memorial service for Carol Gaffney

PEGGY BARBER

June 21, 1939 – July 22, 2011

By: The Reverend Marjorie H. Holm, DOK
All Saints’ Episcopal Church

The Laura June King Alston Chapter at All Saints’ Episcopal Church in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, is saddened by the death of their former president, Peggy Vann Barber. She was a leader in all aspects of our church and spiritual life. Peggy’s faith journey touched many people and she never tired of spreading God’s goodness wherever she went. Though her humility prevented her from knowing it, her most powerful witness of God’s love was without words. Simply watching her was to witness a physical manifestation of the Peace that passes all understanding.

The sorrow of her death cannot match the peace of knowing who she is and where she is now. We give thanks for Peggy’s life. Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

PAULINE STEIN

1922 - 2010

Every Daughter of the King has come to realize and appreciate the uniqueness of the individual. Pauline was no exception to this rule. She never knew a stranger and her prayers excluded no one. In addition, her desire to serve others in His Name never waned, in spite of her ever increasing pain.

While a member of our Chapter at Trinity Church in Escondido, California for three short years, Pauline became involved in every aspect of the group and cherished the times when she was able to “indulge” her passion for educating new members. Prior to coming to California, she served the women of St. Gabriel’s, Englewood, Colorado as President of the DOK Chapter and was an inspiration to all. They write: “Prior to Pauline’s tenure, our chapter was floundering. Filled with the Holy Spirit and her indomitable enthusiasm to educate, our chapter doubled in membership and we continue to thrive to this day.”

We as Daughters hope to become a “blessing” to all. Pauline certainly did and remains so. She is sincerely missed.

Ida Elwyn Alexander
1936-2010

Ida Elwyn Alexander was born on January 31, 1936 in Perth, Western Australia.

Elwyn met Lieutenant Robert Earl ('Bud') Alexander of the U.S. Navy while he was stationed in Northwest Australia. They were married in 1963, and had a son and daughter, Matt and Greer. She was intensely proud of them and her four precious grandchildren.

Elwyn was passionate about her faith and her life in the church. As a member of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church, Alpharetta, GA, she served in various roles including Senior Warden, Altar Guild Chair, Eucharistic Minister and Lector.

Elwyn was one of the seven Charter Members of St. Aidan's Episcopal Church Our Lady of Walsingham Chapter in January of 1999. As part of her DOK ministry, Elwyn helped make sandwiches, then traveled to the Church of the Common Ground in Atlanta to serve them to the homeless. She worked tirelessly at another DOK outreach, Project Open Hand, just a short time prior to her death. She was a woman on a mission in every arena, and working alongside her meant putting your best self forward.

Elwyn had a very unique ability and gift of making each person she met feel like they were her "best friend." When she smiled, her smile lit up the room. To be with Elwyn was to see the light of Christ in her most beautiful face.

No one ever embodied the motto of St. Aidan’s better than Ida Elwyn Alexander. She was truly able “to know Jesus Christ and make him known” in the best way possible: by her living, human example.

Elwyn died of pancreatic cancer peacefully at home on December 29, 2010 in the presence of beloved family and friends. She touched all those who knew her through her kindness, compassion, and selfless service to others. She is deeply and greatly missed by all who love her.

Nancy Watkins (4/11/32 – 5/4/11) and her beloved husband, Larry (2/15/28 – 4/11/11), served tirelessly to support and expand The Order of the Daughters of the King. They were very active in Trinity Parish in Flushing, MI during the 1970s; Nancy became a charter member and first President of the St. Catherine Chapter there in October, 1981, then President of the Michigan Diocese and Province V president on National Council from 1988 to 1991.

Nancy Watkins
1932 - 2011

When the Watkins moved from MI, Nancy attended every Triennial as a Daughter-at-large. The Watkins joined St. Augustine’s in Tempe, AZ and St. Margaret Chapter in 2000, represented the Daughters on the ECW Diocesan Board for several terms as Vice President of the AZ Diocese of the Order of the Daughters of the King. She served as President of St. Margaret Chapter for several terms, and Treasurer on the Province VIIII Board from 2006-2009. She served as President of the AZ Diocese for The Daughters from 2006 until her passing in May, 2011.

She was instrumental in starting a number of Sr. and Jr. Chapters in Arizona, including the Clare of Assisi Chapter at the Church of the Advent in Sun City West, AZ and the Jubilee Chapter at Christ the King in Tucson.

Nancy and Larry each had such a sincere way of accepting us immediately as old friends and then encouraging us to step beyond our boundaries of what we thought we could accomplish in growing our spirituality and in serving as members of our Order. We are thankful for each of them being in our lives and reluctantly release our love and respect for each of them into God’s care.

Daughter of the King, Child of God

You came to us on angel’s wings
for just a little while
And the tears that flow
will not erase our memories
and the beauty of your smile.

The Bible tells us to welcome strangers
as many have entertained angels unaware.
I know the day you came to us
you were an answer to our prayers.

Daughter of the King, Child of God,
how you longed to see His face.
How does it feel to be in the presence
of His beauty and His grace?

Daughter of the King, Child of God,
your time on earth has come to an end.
Where will we find a better daughter,
sister, mother or friend.

-Terri Wilson

Ruth “Annette” Mills
December 13, 1932 -
 July 11, 2010

Ruth “Annette” Mills

Annette Mills was a Daughter of the King for 51 years. On December the 14, 2008 she celebrated her fiftieth anniversary, as being a Daughter of the King, at All Saints Episcopal Church in Las Vegas Nevada. Congresswoman Shelley Berkley presented a plaque in her honor, in the presence of friends, family and guests.

She devoted a life time of prayer and service to the community of Las Vegas. She was the first Daughter of the King in Nevada, she was the one who started the first chapter at All Saints and from there we have a diocese. She was instrumental in starting several of chapters in the diocese.

Her effective service in the church has been recognized in the National Lay Leaders Directory, where she has been listed for nine years. Her service to her community was noted when she received the signal honor of being named one of 500 women who have influenced life in Nevada over the last 100 years.

Her spiritual knowledge and leadership will be missed for many of her friends and especially the Daughters of the King.
